Materuni: a tall fall on Kilimanjaro's southern slopes
Above Moshi, on the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro, a footpath through Chagga coffee and banana farms leads to Materuni waterfall, which drops in a single white ribbon through the forest. It is the classic half day from Moshi.
Where it is
Materuni village sits on the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro above Moshi, on the edge of the mountain's forest. The waterfall is a walk beyond the village, so it is reached on foot rather than seen from a vehicle.
The walk
The path descends through Chagga farmland, coffee and banana growing together under the trees, and follows the valley into forest. The fall comes into view well before you reach it. The way back is uphill and takes longer than the way down.
Who it suits
Reasonably active walkers. The path is steep in places and slippery after rain; shoes with grip matter more than fitness.
Fitting it in
A morning or afternoon from Moshi, the day before or after a Kilimanjaro climb. It is often paired with a Chagga coffee visit in the village, and it combines with the Kikuletwa hot springs or Serval Wildlife for a full day in the region.
