Arusha from a rooftop: tree-lined streets and low buildings with the green foothills of Mount Meru behind

Arusha, given the day it deserves

Most visitors see Arusha through a vehicle window on the way to the parks. Given a day, it is a proper East African town: the Cultural Heritage Centre, the craft markets, the clock tower and the streets between them, all under Mount Meru.

The Cultural Heritage Centre

On the western edge of town, a gallery and craft complex holding Tanzanian art, carving, beadwork and gemstones under one roof. It is the natural first hour of the day, and the place to understand what you will see in the markets afterwards.

The town

Arusha sits at the foot of Mount Meru at around 1,400 metres, which is why the air is cool. The clock tower, the Maasai craft market and the central market lie within a short distance of each other, and the streets are best on foot with someone who knows them.

A note on expectations

It is not a game drive and there is no wildlife in it. It is the town, its people and its crafts, at walking pace.

Fitting it in

An arrival day, a departure day, or the day between a safari and a flight. It fits around a Kilimanjaro Airport transfer and can take in the Tanzanite Experience.

Questions

Questions, answered

Do we walk or drive?

Both. The town is spread out, so the day moves by vehicle between areas and on foot within them.

Can I add the Tanzanite Experience?

Yes. It is in town and fits the same day.

Is lunch included?
