Kikuletwa: clear spring water under the fig trees
A group of spring-fed pools at Kikuletwa in Hai District, Kilimanjaro Region, known locally as Chemka. The water is clear to the bottom and shaded by fig trees, and most people spend the afternoon in it.
Where it is
Kikuletwa lies in Hai District, Kilimanjaro Region, on the plain south-west of Moshi. The last stretch is a rough track, which is why it is usually reached with a vehicle from Moshi or Boma Ng'ombe rather than on foot.
What you do there
Swim. The pools are spring-fed and clear enough to see the sandy bottom, with fig-tree roots along the edge and shade over most of the water. There is little else to do, which is precisely its charm.
Who it suits
Anyone coming off Kilimanjaro who wants to sit in water for an afternoon, families, and travellers with a spare day around Moshi.
Fitting it in
A rest day after a climb, or with Serval Wildlife and Materuni waterfall for a day in the region.
