Destination
Tarangire National Park
Baobabs, and the largest elephant population in northern Tanzania.
What is actually there
Elephant in very large numbers, plus lion, leopard, giraffe, and dry-season concentrations along the Tarangire river. The baobabs make it the most photogenic of the northern parks.
When to go — the honest answer
June to October. In the dry season the river is the only water for a long way and the game concentrates on it in numbers that are hard to believe. In the green season the animals disperse out of the park entirely and it can be very quiet. This is the one northern park where the month genuinely decides the experience.
How long
An afternoon and a morning. Tarangire rewards a full day but rarely needs two.

Questions
What people ask
Is Tarangire worth including in a short trip?
In the dry season, absolutely — it is two hours from Arusha and delivers immediately. Between November and May we would rather put the day elsewhere and will say so.
