Lake Manyara National Park
The half-day park — groundwater forest, an escarpment, flamingos, and lions that sometimes climb.
What is actually there
A narrow strip between the Rift escarpment and the lake, which packs a surprising range into a small area: groundwater forest with baboon troops, open floodplain, hippo pool, and flamingo on the shallows when water levels suit.
The tree-climbing lions
Manyara is known for them and they are real, but they are not a scheduled attraction. Some trips see them and most do not. Come for the forest and the escarpment; treat the lions as a bonus.
Why it earns its half day
It is on the road between Arusha and the crater, so it costs no extra driving. The habitat is completely unlike anything else on the circuit, which is the real argument for it.
