Stone Town
A dense old quarter of coral-stone buildings, carved doors and narrow lanes, and the best reason to give the island more than a beach. Two nights is enough to walk it properly.
Choosing a coast
The north has the least tidal variation and water you can swim in all day. The east is more dramatic and much of it empties at low tide, leaving a long walk to the water. The south-west is quieter and better for diving. We match the coast to your dates rather than to a brochure.
When to go
June to October and December to February are dry. The long rains in April and May are heavy enough that many coastal places close.
