4,562 m, and worth doing for itself

The route
Why this one
Meru is treated as a warm-up and it deserves better. The summit ridge is the most dramatic walking in northern Tanzania, and you start among giraffe and buffalo. If you are climbing Kilimanjaro afterwards, this is worth more than any training plan.

What happens, in order
Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Miriakamba to Saddle Hut
Steep forest, then the saddle. Afternoon walk up Little Meru at 3,820 m for the acclimatisation.

Questions
Asked before every departure
Why is there a ranger?
Because it is a national park with buffalo and elephant in it. The ranger is armed and required, not optional.
Before or after Kilimanjaro?
Before, with at least two days between. Doing it after wastes the acclimatisation.
